The Swansea Environment Centre is the first of it’s kind in Wales, which features one-off timber and stainless steel trusses, Warmcell insulation, 2 turf roofs and a first floor deck, natural and solar- powered ventilation. The clients brief was to extend an existing 1920’s load bearing masonry Victorian building to provide a low tech, high quality social space, café and associated kitchen, reading room and roof top garden to the existing facilities. The new-build element featuring different building techniques was added to the converted former telephone exchange. The structural form of the building was framed and formed using green Welsh oak poles cut from a sustainably managed forest, re-cycled card materials formed into cladding and recycled stone and slate. The project was awarded a Civic Trust Design Award.
